Could You Play The Leap Open Beta On A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 2

A Peek At The TSMC Fabbed Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

Qualcomm have moved from Samsung to TSMC for their refresh of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, predictably named the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.  Qualcomm have suggested you should expect a modest performance increase,  a 3.2 GHz peak CPU boost which is a 10% percent  improvement, and the same increase in GPU performance.  The real improvement will be the power efficiency, as the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 supposedly offers a 30% improvement over the original.

The power savings come from a 15% reduction in CPU power requirements and 30% less for the GPU, which should end up equating to around an hour of extra usage.   Don’t let the power savings trick you into thinking that the GPU is slacking off, as it will offer 10bit colour depth as well as the small performance boost.

It will be interesting to see if switching foundries mid-generation resolves some of the problems we have seen with the original Snapdragon 8 GPU.

If you have some time this weekend, there is an open beta of a new online multiplayer FPS called Leap which runs from 10:00am PT today until to May 22 at 6:00pm PT.  It actually releases June 1st, if it turns out to be an enjoyable experience.
