An Epic 3D Battle

The FPS Review have pitted brother against brother in a competition between the young Ryzen 7 5800X3D and the older Ryzen 7 5800X to determine the difference vast stacks of L3 make.  The 5800X3D sports 96MB of L3 cache, three times as much as the 32MB on the original 5800X.  That did lead to a decrease in frequencies, with the Base dropping to 3.4GHz from 3.8GHz, the Turbo is set to 4.5GHz, also down from 4.7GHz.

When you are looking at the various benchmarks it becomes clear that there is very little difference between the two processors, with the 5800X winning on single threaded tests and the 5800X3D doing better on the multithreaded tests.  With gaming, often there is little difference, however in Flight Simulator and Far Cry 6 the extra 3D cache give the 5800X3D a clear win;  not just a percentage or two.

They also show some interesting results on how well the two CPUs frequencies vary under load, which reveals some interesting insights into why the clock difference may not matter as much as you think.
