Meet The Innogrit IG5236 PCIe 4.0 4×4 NVMe 1.4 Controller
If you were expecting yet another PCIe 4.0 SSD review with a Phison controller then you are in for a pleasant surprise as Acer chose the Innogrit IG5236 controller for their Predator GM7000 M.2 drive, paired with the familiar Micron 96-layer 3D TLC NAND. The 2TB drive up for review at TechPowerUp comes with a five year warranty and a 1300 TBW endurance rating. To offset that TLC it comes with a 2GB DDR4-2666 cache.
The drive is in a M.2 2280 form factor, and will not only work in your PC but is also rated to be fully compliant with that PlayStation 5 you still hope to buy one day. They tested it against heavy hitters like the Corsair MP600 Pro, WD Black SN850 and the Samsung 980 Pro, showing that the Predator GM7000 is as fast, if not faster at most tasks. However, there is one test in which Acer’s drive could not keep up, the total drive write.
The tests show 5 GB/s transfer until you hit 640 GB and exhaust the SLC cache and transfers will drop to 2 GB/s for a couple of gigabytes after which speeds drop to 800 MB/s with occasional bumps to 2 GB/s. If you don’t tend to write hundreds of gigabytes at once you will never see this slow down but it is worth knowing about if you do happen to do so.
